Fly With the Eagles 10K

Melissa and I ran the Fly With the Eagles 10K and both had great races, and a great time. It was the first of what is to be an annual race. Despite not having a very detailed listing on the FLRC website (or anywhere online), the race was very well organized. Everyone got free T-shirts, most miles were marked, and an emergency vehicle stayed just ahead of the leader (who turned out to be a Russian that some of us know). They even had grouped the safety pins into fours! There were also a large number of prizes.

The course was a loop, heading out on some backwoods highways, following a river for a bit. After mile 2, you leave the river, and there is a very challenging hill that goes up and up and up for almost a mile. My 4-mile split gave average miles that were one minute slower than my average over the prior 2.2 miles. Lori Kingsley, the first woman (and the winner of the SC half), affectionately dubbed it Satan's Hill. Everyone had to overcome Satan, and resist the temptation to walk. A steep downhill follows until roughly mile 4.5, and then it's slightly downhill to the finish. I finished in 38:24 for third male, and I clocked Melissa at 45:11, good for fourth female.

The organizers were very friendly, and there was a huge amount of Dasani water, brownies, bananas, and chili after the race. There were raffle drawings for small prizes (we got $10 worth of subs at a local shop).

The weather was very good for a race, with a slight wind throughout and the sun shining down on us. Again, it was very well organized, and a lot of fun. Keep it in mind for next year!
