| Women’s Distance Festival: Flowers, Good Cookies, and a Beautiful Setting | |
pots and the oldest woman receives a bottle of wine? It's hard to think of another race that nurtures its runners as well as the Women's Distance Festival 5K in Dryden, NY, on July 15, 2004. Diane Sherrer and Lorrie Tily, the codirectors of this race sponsored by the Finger Lakes Runners Club, create a festive environment where everyone is made to feel important. After the race they provide good bakery cookies and fresh fruit. While they don't give T-shirts, the price of the race is very low at $8, so everyone can afford it. They also ask each runner to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the local food pantry, so the community benefits as well, making the event more meaningful.
The race course itself is lovely, though not easy. The event begins at the Dryden Lake Town Park in early evening. The first mile is in the woods along an old railroad bed over which trees provide shade. Then the course goes around the lake on hilly roads to return to the park. This year Suzanne Myette, 47, broke the masters record to arrive first in 19:35. Second was Becky Harman, 34, who had been leading and was thus only a second behind in 19:36. Jennifer MacNeal, 23, was third in 21:00; Kelly Murray, 16, fourth in 21:05; and Charity McManaman, 27, fifth in 21:41. See Results section for all the details.
