| Roundup of August’s First Full Weekend | |
Lots going on in early August in addition to Vigil Mountain Madness and and Phelps. Many of us competed in the Great Race, and Molly Huddle made a "surprise" visit to the Kelly LaBare 5K.
At the LaBare 5K, Andy Cloke of Elmira won his second title in 15:49, and Molly Huddle placed third overall and first female (duh!) in 16:16. Suzanne Myette finished second to Molly in the women's division—a new claim to fame, clocking a 18:56, and also first masters. Among locals, Zeb Lang (17:35); Kevin Coughlin (18:23); John Hylas (18:34); Derek Dean (19:09); and dad Bob Huddle (20:50) beaten in the M50 division by Tom Carter, who cranked out a 17-ish 5K. Molly joined Hulk Hogan and Rupert from Survivor as the "famous visitors" sighted at the Spiedie Fest.
Some of us latched the canoes on the car tops and headed to Auburn for the 27th Annual Great Race. It's the first time I've ever done it, and it lived up to its reputation of fun beyond imagination and impeccable organization. Certified courses, chip timing, and beer and food for all 2000+ athletes. The conditions were near perfect, especially the water calmness.
I'll be leaving many locals out with results here, but here it goes with apologies to those not mentioned:
Laurie Cuomo, Yvette de Boer and their canoeists (?names?) won the F40 team division in the traditional long course race, finishing 35th overall in 2:07:28. Laurie cycled the 16+ course in 47-ish and Yvette, who told me Saturday at the mall that she's not really in shape, ran a 40:54 10K! {Come back to the FLRC masters team, Yvette.}
Earl Steinbrecher and Becky Harman won the tandem mixed couples' division and finished third overall in 2:07:25. Earl ran the 10K, Becky cycled, and then both canoed 4 miles.
Our team (our average ages met the 50–59 requirement), the ToughGirls, won the F50 team division in the long course. Sarah Thompson (cyclist) and Phyllis Radke and Mary Wenck (canoeists) joined me to score a 2:29:48. I told Sarah prerace I'd finish the 10K between 46–49 minutes, with a 46 being an ovary-popping performance. But, I did it (pop! pop!) and ran a masters PR 46:44. Then the sensational Sarah, replacing an injured Zsofia, cycled a 48-ish leg, outdoing many of the men's team cyclists. Mary and Phyl paddled hard to a PR sub hour, after practicing very little in the Perfect Storm conditions of Seneca Lake. We had a blast; I love you gals. We all gave it everything we had for the team! We also were among the top women's teams despite age. Zsofia, we missed you; Amanda S. and Sandy F., thanks for giving us the tip to ask Sarah. God Bless the FL Cycling Club!
Also in the mix, Glenn Swan & Co. finished No. 1 in the long course div.; Scott Weeks & Co. finished fifth overall; Eric Maki & Co., 21st; Ron Hulslander & Gang (73rd). Paul Kempkes of Lansing ran a sub-37 10K, but his cyclist had a flat. (Note to PK: Next time take KC Bennett and she'll run the bike & flat tire into transition for a victory.) Aimee Roberts & Co. was 24th in the kayak four-person team division.
I also spotted Nate Lockett, but have no clue how his team finished.
At outdoor masters nationals in Illinois, Rochester's Jim Robinson won the M50 national championship titles in the 800 (2:05.13) and 1500 (4:22.75). Wow!
