I am pleased to announce that we have two new codirectors for the Tortoise and the Hare. Tessa Bauer DuMont and KC Bennett will be working together on the 2005 edition of the Tortoise and Hare. Welcome back Tessa, and KC we are very happy to have you as part of our family of race directors.
We also have two new co-directors for The Fillmore 5K. Jim Strehle and Lauri Francis have agreed to take over the responsibilities of codirecting this race. Jim currently serves as a member at large on the Finger Lakes Runners Club board of directors. Lauri lives and works in the Syracuse area, but attends many of our events and has enjoyed running the Fillmore course for years.
Chris Irving will be the 2005 Women's Distance Festival race director. Starting January 1, 2005 Chris will also be taking over the Treasurer's position on the FLRC Board. Thanks Chris—and welcome.
We have had a few people express interest in working on a committee directorship of the Ithaca 5&10. If this race is to continue, we need to have someone willing to act as race director, co-director, or to chair a committee directorship. We will then also need people willing to take on a committee role. Please contact me if you are interested. The committee should get together before the October meeting of the board of directors where the 2005 calendar will be finalized. If sufficient help is not found for the Ithaca 5&10, it will be removed from our race calendar. This is our club's oldest race. It would be a shame to discontinue it.
Congratulations to the following runners who hit age-group ranking marks in their respective races. Brackets indicate standard that must be hit or bettered. The results have been submitted to USA Track & Field's Road Running Information Center.
5-miler: Don Farley, 70, Ithaca, 38:15 [40:00]; Chuck Collins, 70, Ithaca, 39:05 [40:00]; Frank Moore, 82, Ithaca, 43:26 [1:00:00].
10-miler: Shirley Woodford, 48, Burdett, 1:09:51 [1:13]; Barb Morrissey, 57, Owego, 1:21:34 [1:27]; Mary Wenck, 56, Corning, 1:25:27 [1:27].

October 15, 5:00–6:30 pm at Cornell Cinema, 104 Willard Straight Hall: The Thompson Family: A Make-a-Wish Experience
This film explores the Thompson family experience with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. Mya, at age 10, was stricken with leukemia but was able to experience the 'power of a wish' through the help of friends such as Olympic Star, Marion Jones, her family, and the Ithaca community. Her sister, Rei, (age 16, film producer) recounts Mya's triumphant story in a tribute to Make-A-Wish.
Rei is a Senior at Ithaca High School (IHS) and was an Ithaca College Park School intern this past spring. Mya, a sophomore, at IHS played JV basketball and had a 4.0 GPA in high honors classes in 2003–2004. Kevin, the dad, is an Assistant Coach with the Cornell Men's Track Team and works part-time with the Ithaca Youth Bureau. Michelle, the mom, is a 2004 Board Member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and currently is a visiting faculty member in the Cornell Department of City and Regional Planning Department.
See www.rso.cornell.edu/wishmakers for additional details.
Zeppy 5K—The fourth annual Zeppy 5K will be held at 9 am., Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Cornell Vet School. Note the earlier starting time, and the Saturday date instead of Sunday (there was a conflict in scheduling for the Plantations, where the race is run).
There will be cash prizes for the top three men/women in the 5K, age-group awards, goodie bags and a great Zeppy T-shirt.
For info, go to www.zeppyrun.com where you can download a race application.
Proceeds benefit vet care to needy animals, including those abandoned pets in five area shelters.
St. James Run/Walk—The St. James 5K Run and 2.5K Walk will be held at 2 pm., Sunday, Oct. 24, at the St. James Catholic Church in Johnson City. It's a wonderful race, by friendly parishioners, including FLRC-ers Suzy Myette and Kevin Pasterchik. Proceeds benefit church programs, which include tuition assistance and Make-A-Wish.
Go to www.triplecitiesrunnersclub.org or www.fingerlakesrunners.org for a direct link.
Steeple Chase 5K—FLRC-er Laura Voorhees, her family, and the parishioners at the Interlaken Reformed Church will present the second annual Interlaken Steeple Chase 5K on Nov. 13 at 10 am. Besides being a well-organized race, the homemade food prepared by the church staff, the bagpiper who plays just before the race begins and the creative awards, add delightful surprises for all the runners.
Despite the race's title, it's not a real steeplechase. It's a fund-raiser for the church's steeple.
The entry fee is just $10 by Nov. 8, $5 for kids 12-under or $15/$8, respectively, on race day.
For info, contact Laura Voorhees at 387-5441 or e-mail: lauravoorhees@FLTG.net.
