PR's (in last 10 years):
mile: (Editor's note: Sal competed in the first Hartshorne women's masters mile, 25 years ago.)
5K: Elmira-Thon and Pud's age group wins.
marathon: Getting 3rd F40 in Boston; and winning Pittsburgh age group. [Editor's note: In Sally's prime, she won age group awards at almost all national-level marathons in the east. The Boston performance was back when women's qualifying standards were 3:20 and 3:30—period. How many of you will be able to run a 3:20 marathon in your 40s or 50s?)

Best running performance: Winning women's team in Wineglass Relay with Ellen McHugh and Diane Sherrer—Ole Sal & the Gals. We won in 3:01.

Most memorable running performance and why: Finishing Mt. Washington in June with Di and Phyl without running any races before the run-up. I had a sore hip, and I was out of shape (Sal). [Editor's note: Sal endured weeks of Gorge Rd. uphill running repeats with Di and Phyl She's our hero!]

Frank: Last official cross-country competition in 1957. It was an intercollegiate championship in Van Cortland Park in NYC. I finished the race! Also, cheering on many friends over the last 28 years.

Typical training week a month or so before a major race: Sal: long run on trails; speed or hill runs; tempo runs; train on elliptical machine, bike or swimming.

Injuries: Sal: pulled iliotibial muscle on right leg in June; sore hip joint on left side.

Favorite race and why: Boilermaker 15K. Great distance and organization for so many runners.

Favorite running shoes: New Balance; Saucony Premier

Favorite place(s) to train: Queen Catherine Trail in Montour Falls; Horseheads Park.

Favorite type of running surface: Smooth, dirt trails.

Running idol: Grete Waitz and Priscilla Welch (Editor's note: Sal finished 2nd masters to Welch at the Pittsburgh Marathon in the late 1980s.)

People who have had an influence on your running and why: Diane Sherrer and Phyllis Radke. They are patient and reasonable in their training, and encouraging. (Sal & Frank, we couldn't have done it without you!—P & D)

Why do you run? Gets the heart pumping and burns more fat in less time. It's a habit after 26 years.

Any advice for other runners? Be patient but consistent in your training. Eat and drink and rest for the number of miles you run.
