| Pit Run: Another in the Series of Geezer Reports |
| |
For the third year in a row I drove to Oneonta the
first Sunday in October for the 10K Pit Run. This is the third race in
the Police Pursuit Series, following one in Binghamton and the Ithaca
Pud's Run. Three years ago I ran 49:04, not far from the 65–69
age-group course record. So, last year I had hopes of setting a record,
but imagine my chagrin to run a faster time and still come in second to a
65-year-old who did set a record. This year, in my new age group, I
managed to run 50 minutes flat for a 70–74 record by 5 min, 40 s. The
race was won for the fourth year in a row by Kenyan Paul Mwangi in
31:35. Second was Ithacan Mike Styczynski in 32:43. Charlene Lyford won
her age group in 41:03. If these times don't seem too fast, the local
paper quoted Mike S. as saying "once I got to the top [of the hill], I
… used the downhill to my best advantage. …There are a ton of hills
in Ithaca, but nothing like that." Amanda Laytham, a May graduate of
Ithaca College and a seven-time All-American in cross-country and track,
took second in the women's race in 39:59. Michelle LaFleur of Savannah,
GA, was first in 36.44.
