Family Fun Day

On Sunday, March 17, we had our annual "Family Fun Day at Barton Hall, Cornell U. My friend Sally Rusby said it was the best organized FFD ever. The kids sure had a lot of fun. The adults did too.

The events ranged from the mile pair races with one adult & one child running together with the distance being run depending on the age of the child. The different heats were according to the age the child with each succeeding age group getting older & the distance getting longer. They also had two different relay events. These were the "serious" events. The most exciting were these, and it also was the most popular; was the elimination event. Because of the large number of participants, they had to eliminate 5 runners per heat instead of the two (the way the event was planned). The last 5 runners to cross the finish line were eliminated and they waited for about a minute to let the runners catch their breath between heats.

This went on for several heats until they had 5 runners left. They ran that heat and they eliminated the last runner (& maybe the middle runner too). They had an award for the fastest male and female runner. A lady was eliminated in either the 5thor 4th heat from the end. She was the only woman runner for about 2 heats. For many others and me this was the most exciting event to watch.

The "infield" events wre the fun ones. The had sack races, 3 legged races, backward races and wheelbarrow races for the kids and a backward race; I ran it for the adults. Plus, they had a wheelbarrow race for the adults but only about 2 pairs of teens ran it. No adults wanted to run it I think. But several adults joined me in the backward race.

The had a nice award ceremony at the end where they gave medals to 12 years and younger athletes, and Gatorade to the older athletes. Everyone seemed to be having fun & we all went home smiling.

My only complaint is PLEASE take off your shoes when you put on the "ropes" for the 3-legged race or you will break the rope. I saw several of them break.

[Editor's note: Thanks again, Victoria for your wonderful support of our indoor track series. We appreciate your articles, your cheering and the bags of goodies you prepare for us each meet.]
