FLRC Newsletter - May 2004 |
| News & Updates | |
Congratulations to Finger Lakes Runners Club member
Mary Wenck, who completed her quest to finish a marathon on all seven
continents by finishing on April 12 the Santiago, Chile 26.2-miler in
4:09:14.
Again, we say farewell to Tracy Atlas who will be moving to New Hampshire with her husband following Cornell graduation. Tracy has worked on this newsletter with me for over a year, and has raised its standards to a whole new level of excellence.
The newsletter is another one of those jobs that is performed in silence and behind the scenes. It's a tremendous amount of work for both of us, but it magically appears once a month in full bloom. We can proudly say that we know the work is appreciated by comments that come our way. With no humility, I say we have an awesome newsletter, thanks in part to the wild imaginations, senses of humor and willingness for adventure of the individual FLRC runners who submit their stories.
I will miss you greatly, Tracy. And I appreciate
everything you did for me and the club membership!
...Sniff, sniff! I'll miss you too! And I agree: this newsletter ROCKS because of the awesome editorial prowess Diane brings to it, Tom's dedicated web mastery, and because of the thoughtful contributions by all of you. Thank you for harnessing the essence of running into your stories, and for letting me help represent them for you. It has been a pleasure.
Empire State Games...Senior and Summer & Boilermaker & Freihofers
The entry deadline for the ES Senior Games, June 8-13 in Cortland and outlying areas, is May 7. For the most part, with a few exceptions, the one fee for all is $25. There are road, track & field, cycling, race walking, orienteering events and a triathlon for athletes ages 50-over. These Games receive rave reviews...
Empire State Summer Games will be in Binghamton at the end of July. Competitive divisions include scholastic, open and masters. Central NY trials for HS and open will be at East Minoa HS in Syracuse June 11-12. Masters qualify in a do-it-yourself method by going to club-hosted indoor or outdoor track meets, and certified road races. Entry deadline is June 21.
Go to www.empirestategames.org for all the details. It's all up, including masters qualifying charts. I have requested 50 masters ESG booklets to be sent to us ASAP.
The early (translation: cheaper) entry deadline for the Boilermaker is June 13. Fees rise after that, and you risk being shut out. Our April newsletter contained a hardcopy Boilermaker application, and I'm told you can avoid extra online processing fees by mailing the app into Utica.
Speaking of Boilermaker, Hall of Fame officials have announced there will be no Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies this year during Boilermaker weekend. They cite a conflict of interest due to the Olympic Track & Field trials being held the same weekend in California. Officials will roll over nominees until 2005. Editor's opinion: they're having financial issues as well, and are just using that as an excuse not to organize the usual celebrity-fest. As an alternative activity, go visit the Long Distance Running Hall of Fame while you're in Utica.
The Freihofers Run for Women 5K Open & Masters
National Championship will be held June 5 in Albany. Early registration
deadline is April 30, then fees rise; you must register before race
day. Go to www.freihofersrun.com for
information and online sign ups for teams and individuals.
Takes off from Washington Park at 7pm on Thursday, June 3!!!
Be there at 6 pm…..
Monitor the FLRC listserv for more info throughout May, or contact Jeffrey Juran (jefjuran@lightlink.com, 273-9685).
