Introducing a New Trail Run: Tanglewood Tanglefoot 5- and 10-Miler

Jim Chely, active FLRC member, very good runner, bonefide Stonehead/Pebblehead, chilled to the bone snowshoer, rookie indoor miler-- and an enthusiastic trail run race director -- is producing a new trail run at the Tanglewood Nature Center, June 20, near Elmira. After this year's inaugural edition, Jim hopes to petition to have this trail run added to our FL Trail Runners Circuit.

You might call it stalking, or you might call it mutual admiration, but Jim has named portions of his trail run (double loops, 5 or 10 milers) after some of our noted trail runners. For example: Dave's (Jones) Descent; Ingall's Incline; Audrey's (Balander) Meadow and Harman's (Becky) Hill. Now, how can you resist that adventure?

We're enclosing the Twood application this month (Ed: actually available on the web), and below is an introduction from Jim, who lives in Elmira. Contact numbers and email can be found on the application. Don't Miss It!

Twood Tales

This is only my 3rd year running trails, and first year as a dues paying member of FLRC. Running these trails with the great group from the club is the most fun I've had in years. So much so that I have decided to host the first trail event in Chemung County.

The Tanglewood Tanglefoot Trail Run will be on June 20 at 10 a.m. at the Tanglewood Nature Center in Elmira. I am hoping that all of the FLRC members will attend the inaugural run. I believe that it will be challenging enough for you to make the drive worth it (40 minutes).

Heck, I leave my house at 4 a.m. for the FLT 50s, and 5 a.m. for the others, so I made this a 10 a.m. start to allow for the drive. I have been inspired by some of my fellow hoofers enough to name parts of the run after them. There is a nice section of open field with a beautiful view that is called Audrey's Meadow. Audrey (Balander) is a tough competitor, but fun to run with. Another part is a downhill on moss covered logging roads, followed by an immediate uphill portion. The first part is Dave Jones' Downhill. Dave is fearless descending, and hard to stay with. Ingall's Incline named for our track (and trail RD) director, who is strong like a bull, but never runs more than a 10K! The .5 mile home stretch is all uphill, Harman's Hill. Becky is more animal than human. She may not be the speediest descending, but there is nobody smoother and steadier going up. I know having watched from a distance as she gets farther away. Even if it's dry weather, you can expect a few spots of wet and mud. Also, there is a section along the cliffs that is downhill. Be careful, as there is a right hand turn to send you back into the woods right when you are picking up speed.

The left hand side will send you to Rt. 352. An easy pickup for the ambulance. Post-race will be bagels, Snapple, water and Red Hook Beer.
