Once again, I'm enclosing the USA Track & Field charts of men's and women's performance standards for national rankings in your age group. Last month, we ran the track charts, this time you must hit these standards in a certified road race.
It's not easy, but some of you can do it. Race organizers of our club road races do submit results to USATF/RRIC for rankings and records. Only certified courses count towards rankings and records.
Read 'em and weep!
The March 2004 issue of Running Times magazine has once again declared the very worthy Margret Betz, 67, of Conklin, N.Y. the best female ages 65-69 in the U.S. Margret has a long list of accomplishments listed under her name including her Skunk Cabbage Half Marathon and Ithaca 5 & 10 5-mile performances. Congrats to Margret!

The first runner to cross the finish line April 19 at the Boston Marathon will be a woman. Elite female runners will leave Hopkinton 25 minutes ahead of the rest of the field, including elite men. This will likely bring the first women to the finish line 10 minutes ahead of the first male finisher. The 108th Boston Marathon is accepting qualified entrants until the 20,000 limit is reached. Go to www.baa.org.
As of early February, the all-female masters marathon has 1,500 entrants. The marathon is slated for Mar. 21, at 8:30 a.m., in New York City's Central Park. Go to www.nyrrc.org for information and online registration. [If you go... let me know. --ds]
Congratulations to FLRC runner Cathy Troisi who was given a national service award from the 50 States & DC Club. Cathy often sacrifices her own marathons to pace other runners to the finish line. Note Cathy recently helped someone finish the Rock 'n Roll Marathon in Arizona -- a 7 hour, 44 minute effort!
Go to www.50anddcmarathongroupusa.com to read about Cathy's honor.
Congrats to Cathy Troisi (& family) on becoming a grandmother again, thanks to her daughter Kimmi and husband. Zachary James was born on Feb. 22 in the Albany area. Cathy and husband Jim have a granddaughter Ashley, too.
Cornell assistant track coach, former Ithaca United TC coach and FLRC ex. board member, Kevin Thompson is credited with saving a woman's life in Colorado Springs during a coaching seminar in December. Kevin executed the Heimlich maneuver to Linda Buffetti, a member of the U.S. cycling staff, when she started choking on her food at an adjacent table. Good job, Kevin!
