Big Shoes to Fill—Thanks to John Sholeen

Our irreplaceable Treasurer John Sholeen informed the board at our last meeting that he plans to retire at the end of the 2004 calendar year. It is with great sadness that I pass this information along to our membership. John has acted as The Finger Lakes Runners Club Treasurer for many many years. He handles a multitude of tasks that will surely take more than one person to fill when he retires. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank John for his many years of dedicated selfless service to our club. Often positions such as this, which are hidden behind the scenes, go unnoticed. If it weren't for people such as John who are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, without expecting anything in return we would not have a running club at all. Please thank John the next time you see him for the years of service and devotion that he has freely given. It will take many to fill the big shoes of this bigger man.

New Treasurer—And Big Thanks to Chris Irving for Filling Them

It is a pleasure to announce that Chris Irving will be taking over the position of FLRC Treasurer, which will be become available in January of 2005. Chris is a long-term club member who is an accountant and bookkeeper. She has experience in serving on boards for other nonprofit organizations. We welcome her with open arms.

New Newsletter Assistant Editor—Welcome to the Circus, Nancy!

Our June issue welcomes FLRC member Nancy Kleinrock of Trumansburg as my able editorial partner. Nancy takes over where Tracy Atlas finished. Nancy has lots of experience with producing newsletters, and will introduce me to the real cyberspace possibilities of producing our monthly publication. Nancy is also a super runner (at least when her bones are intact)—and dancer. She has become a lethal "West End Girl," especially around Wineglass Marathon weekend.

Please bear with us, with delays and such, as we begin working together. Nancy will be doing all of the editing and text desktop publishing electronically. I will be hand-delivering our applications to our publishing source, along with our monthly calendar and local results columns. And, I'll be e-mailing all other text news to Nancy. That means I have to alter my editor's duties a bit.

Thanks for saying yes, Nancy!

And, now, from Nancy, extending the spirit of mutual admiration:

Thanks to you, Diane, for easing me into this role—and to Tracy and Tom Meyer for their assistance, as well. As for the rest of you, please submit your prose to me at nk33@cornell.edu.

So that I notice and open your story/announcement, use "For FLRC Newsletter" as the subject line, or "For FLRC Newsletter with Photo," if you include an attached image for publication. Then I'll be able to thank you, too.

More Empty Shoes

As a club, it is important that more of our members get involved with keeping our club active and running. Most of our current board members have been volunteering for many years and are ready to give up some of their responsibilities. Please consider helping in whatever capacity you are capable of. Contact club President Lorrie Tily ((315)497–3743; ljm2@cornell.edu) if you would like additional information about any of the following positions or if you would like to help in any way.

Equipment Manager

We are looking for an Equipment Manager. Duties include organizing, tracking, and usually storing the assortment of race equipment used at most of the club's races, such as Gatorade containers, surplus race numbers, race course markers, the finish line chute, and other similar items.

Preregistration Data Enterer

We need someone comfortable with computers to volunteer to input race information for preregistered runners into the FLRC results program. We use Race Quick, a program that was written by our very own Joe Dabes. The person accepting this position will also print competition labels for race bibs.

Race Director for the Ithaca 5&10

In 2005, the Ithaca 5 & 10 will need a new race director or at the vary least someone who is willing to act as codirector and take on a lot of the responsibility of putting on this race. This will be Lorrie’s 10th year directing this race, and she is ready to turn over the reins to someone else. There are many responsibilities and duties to putting on this event. Directing this race involves working with the City of Ithaca, the Department of Public Works, the Ithaca Police Department, Bangs Ambulance, and Ithaca High School. The race director needs to gather sponsors, find volunteers, mark the course, work with the results company, purchase awards and post race refreshments, update, print, and distribute race applications, and many other miscellaneous duties.

Help with the Finger Lakes Fifties

It is time to start organizing volunteers for The Finger Lakes Fifties, which is being held on July 3. This is a huge event to put on and requires a massive amount of volunteer support. We are asking those of you who have been reluctant to volunteer in the past to consider giving a few hours toward this national-class ultra event. We offer volunteers a free weekend of camping at the Potomac Campsite in The Finger Lakes National Forest (the only National Forest in New York State; okay, it's always free to camp there, but this time you'll have some entertaining company (—asst editor)). You will also receive a chicken BBQ dinner for your efforts. This is a fun way to meet all of the truly crazy members of our club. My family has been holding down the fort at the aid station known as "The Beach" for years. Why not start your own family tradition of volunteering?

Below is a list of shifts that need to be covered. Please contact Lorrie or RD Joe Reynolds (flnf10155@yahoo.com; (607)564–1804) to help.

Five Aid Stations, two shifts to choose from:

Finish Line, two shifts, three volunteers per shift, one to pull tags, one to record, one to time: 7:30 am–1:30 pm or 1:30 pm–8 pm

Friday Evening Packet Pickup: 4 pm–?

Race Day Registration—two people to help with race day number pickup and registration: 5 am–6:30 am.
