FLRC Newsletter - July 2004 |
| News & Upcoming Events | |
We hit a minor glitch during the publication of our June newsletter. A series of incidents led to a delay in the publication and arrival of our newsletter, and the elimination of the June calendar and individual results listings. We've enclosed the lost results this month.
We're trying new ways of producing our epic publication, and communications lines were scrambled. Be patient; sooner or later we'll be a model of precision once again.
Many thanks to Tom Meyer, Casey Carlstrom, Nancy
Kleinrock, and friends, who helped to fix things fast.
Here's a fall marathon destination worth the gas to drive to, and the exchange rate means more for your money: the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in September.
The fifth-annual Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (plus Half Marathon and 5K) runs September 26th, 2004. Last year, two world records were set there: 72-year-old Ed Whitlock ran 2:59:10, and 92-year-old Fauja Singh ran 5:40:04! Can you believe these ages and times?!
This course is flat, fast, and scenic as it traverses Toronto's beautiful waterfront. It is a Boston qualifier, and, in fact, one of the best qualifying races anywhere, not only because of its terrain but also because the weather at this time of year is perfect for runners. Toronto has hundreds of fantastic attractions and entertainment in the downtown core, great eating, and great shopping.
This event is also the catalyst for half a million dollars in donations raised by runners for a variety of charities. Among the largest are the Leukemia Fund of Canada, Sick Children's Hospital, Canadian Diabetes, and the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.
Perks for those who attend include the following
Ambassadors Needed—Race organizers are looking for runners to be 'ambassadors' this spring to visit some races in their area to hand out Toronto Waterfront Marathon race forms.

The new and faster 5K course, USATF certified, is run through the streets of Fountain Hill. Mile split times and one aid station will be provided. The first 200 applicants will receive a race T-shirt. Entry fee for the 5K is $12, with $7 for high school cross-country team members. The sunrise walk is $7. Prizes in the 5K will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers and the top three place winners in each five-year age division. There will also be awards for the youngest and oldest finishers, and in the Clydesdale division (men over 200 lbs.) as well as numerous raffle prizes.
Refreshments and pizza will be provided after the race. You can cool off after the run at the pool. Showering and changing facilities are available to all entrants and their families.
All proceeds from the Fountain Hill Mayors Cup 5K benefit the George B. Yasso and James Skelly and Mary Strelecki Scholarship Funds. The George B. Yasso Memorial scholarship program provides a $1,000 scholarship to one male or female student–athlete who is graduating high school and planning to go to college. The student–athlete does not need to reside in Fountain Hill. The James Skelly and Mary Strelecki scholarship program provides a $1,000 scholarship to one female and one male graduating high school student–athlete planning to go to college. The student-–athlete must reside in Fountain Hill. Applications for the three scholarships will be available through August 1. The scholarships will be presented at the awards ceremony following the 5K.
