Ithaca United Reaps 16 Medals at USATF Niagara Finals
Ithaca United Track Club earned top marks at the USATF Junior Olympics Niagara Association Championships in Jamestown on June 19. The team brought home 16 top three medals including 7 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze. Several members also marked several personal bests. Bantam boys (age 8–10) Chris Van Loon and Vlad Kutka of Newfield won two gold and two bronze medals in the 1500 and 800 meters. Van Loon's 3:05 was a personal best and club record for age-8 in the 800. Kutka was not far off the mark at 3:09. Midget boys (age 11–12) also did well. Andris Goncarovs of Trumansburg nailed gold twice, once in the 1500 meter (5:16) and later in the 3000-meter race. Doug Moore of Ithaca won the silver in the 3000-meter race and was fourth in the 1500-meter (5:59) event. IUTC rookie Jacob Gelber landed fifth in the 400-meter dash and 12th in a large field of the 200-meter sprinters. Midget girls Christina Brewington claimed three medals all in the field events, gold in the javelin and high jump and third-place bronze in the long jump.

In Youth boys (age 13–14) Sharif Younes landed silver and bronze in the 800 meter (3:34) and the 1500, respectively. Four-year IUTC veteran Brian Maley scored four top medals: one gold in the long jump (4.62 meters), silver in the triple jump (10.07 meters), and bronzes in both the 100 (12.66 seconds) and the 200 (26.62) meter dashes, all personal bests and IUTC age records.

Coach Andri Goncarovs notes that IUTC is particularly strong in distance and selected field events this year. Strong winds made for slower than usual times in the distance events, whereas sprinting events were a little faster with the wind at their backs. Maley, Goncarovs, Van Loon, Younes, Moore, and Brewington now advance to the USATF Junior Olympics Region-2 Finals in Slippery Rock, PA, July 10–11.

He ran 10:17.54 his best mark to date and the seventh fastest 3000-meter mark for this age group in the USA this year, according to the National Youth Runners Ranking System.
