The 2nd annual Cayuga Lake Triathlon, hosted by the Ithaca Triathlon Club, will take place on Sunday, Aug. 1, at Taughannock Falls State Park. This year's event will offer two distance options:
Sprint: half-mile swim in Cayuga Lake; 18-mile bike on Rt. 89 to Cass Park and back; and a 4.6-mile run around the hills of the park.
International: one-mile swim; 24.8-mile bike and a 10K run.
Portions of the net profits will benefit Recycle Ithaca Bikes, a program in Ithaca which repairs used bikes and gives them to anyone who needs them.
For information on the triathlon, go to www.ithacatriathlonclub.org.
Speaking of triathlons... There will be a Musselman sprint and half iron distance triathlon on July 11 in the Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva. The featured guest celebrity will be former world champion (and cancer survivor) Karen Smyers. [Note: that's Boilermaker weekend.]
Half ironmen triathlons are hard to come by in our region. A half Iron tri is a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and half marathon run. The entry fee for the half Ironman is $120 pre June 1, and $135 thereafter. The Sprint Tri (500-yard wim, 150-mile bike and 3-mile run)is $50 pre June 1 and $60 thereafter.

Congrats to Jacob Marnell, son of Lorrie Tily,
who continues to amaze us all with his unlimited talents. Jacob won an
award for his art, and his work is mentioned in a newspaper article and
is on display in Auburn (ask Lorrie for exact locale). And, Jacob and his
Odyssey of the Mind team from Moravia High School placed second in the
New York state championships, and will be traveling to Maryland in May
for the major championships. Fund-raising efforts for traveling expenses
will begin soon; contact team parental advisor Lorrie for details on how
to help.
Congrats to Coreen Steinbach of Pompey, a loyal supporter of FLRC's track meets and the Hartshorne Mile... A noted sports artist, Coreen is illustrating a children's book called "My Dad is an Ironman" (Breakaway Books), which will be released this fall.
Go to www.runningart.com to see Coreen's
wonderful artistic works.
