The first upstate New York edition of the national series of "PACE Races" (standing for "Prostate Awareness and Cancer Education") is coming to Syracuse as part of the twelfth annual Syracuse Festival of RacesT. The PACE Race Men's 5K will be the first of the four Festival of Races running and walking events that will start and finish outside Syracuse University's Manley Field House on Sunday, October 3, 2004.
Mandy Deas, Director of Awareness Programs for the Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC) in Greenwood Village, CO, made the decision to expand the series into Syracuse. Deas expects the PACE Race to be a great fit with a well-established, full-family fitness event like the Festival of Races. "The Prostate Cancer Education Council is excited to be working with such an established running event. The ability to reach such a health conscious audience will enable us to get out the important message that early detection of prostate cancer saves lives; if detected early prostate cancer is nearly 100% survivable."
Dave Oja, founder and director of the Syracuse Festival of RacesT, sees the inclusion of the PACE Race as furthering several of the core goals of the Festival of Races. "The PCEC's message is, obviously, part of what the SFoR is focused on: the promotion of healthy lifestyles, personal fitness, and community wellness," Oja notes. "In addition," he adds, "the PACE Race will provide a focus for local prostate cancer fundraising, and it will generate some additional national exposure for Syracuse as a community that values running and health."
