Indoor Track Countdown

The 2003/4 indoor track season started back in December with the bang of Bruce's starting gun and continued to Family Fun Day in March with great success. This season we also had FLRC shirts and socks to sell and running shoes to collect. The season opener, a 2 mile event, attracted 40 runners and was won by Andy Cloke of Elmira in a very close finish. This set the stage for some excellent races in all the events and meets to follow in the coming months.

January's mile was extremely popular and fast. Coming just 2 weeks before Hartshorne we had to hold several heats as 85 people ran. The winner's time was 4.32 with 9 people running under 5 minutes. February had probably the biggest attendance of all with the initial 5k having 2 heats again this year as 32 people ran. The Valentines relay brought out couples from every direction and Gatorade awards went to the winners, yehaa!

Family Funday in March seemed to move along smoother than in previous years as we held the serious events first before the real kids were on the track. 82 people ran the mile with an amazing 16 running under the 5 minute mark. Family events were a lot of fun as always and the long awaited "200 Countdown" lived up to all the hype! As far as I know most of the people that entered did survive to talk about it - but like the hill at Tortoise and Hare they aren't looking forward to the same challenge for quite some time to come! It was never intended to be an easy event. Just fun, something different and an event everyone can take part in, and hopefully live through! The winners ran the last 200 in under 28 seconds after running 10 or 11 200s with little rest between each one.

So we wrapped up another exciting indoor season, and an excellent season it was. It's sad to see it end but in the next few weeks the outdoor schedule will be put together and well get to run half as many laps for the same distances!

Thanks go to so many people for the wonderful meets we just completed. Thanks to Cornell for the use of Barton Hall and its superb track, athletes from all over came to enjoy the facility. At every meet 20 or more volunteers spend much of the meet helping out - and running too. I really don't want to single out individuals as so many people have helped and I know Id leave out names I shouldn't but my special thanks go to Tom for compiling all the results at every meet, I know sometimes late into the night. Tom has been heavily involved with a house building project this winter and to do the results too is totally insane! People drive from miles away to run with us as they know we put on a quality and enjoyable morning. Its thanks to all the terrific volunteers and runners that we are what we are, thank you all, Tim
