WDF Wrap Up

Many thanks to everyone who supported Lorrie Tily and me during our 4th annual Women's Distance Festival 5K at Dryden Lake Town Park.

It's the race with lemons, candles, flowers, fruit, catered cookies and tableclothes. As Steve Ryan, the server of Archway cookies, said to me at Frolics, "You had a really nice spread at your race!"

We had a total of 66 finishers, with many new faces, some coming from far away (Colorado and Philadelphia), some family teams and many friends of the race directors. [Thanks Dorothy & Rachel for coming out of retirement!]

Valerie Curtis of Ithaca, who finished 2nd last year to Molly Huddle, finally got her victory. FLRC's Katie Danner and Rebecca Harman followed in the 2nd and 3rd positions. All three times were very good given the challenging course.

Katie Danner and daughter Sarah, age 9, won the mother-daughter team title.

Audrey Balander claimed the masters title, and Margret Betz, who has been to all four of our races, won the senior title for the 4th time. We especially had a super senior division with Betz, Sandy Folzer and Lennie Tucker all posting age-group national-class times, and Linda Eberly just missing a ranking time. My No. 1 draft pick for my F50 women's FLRC team, Zsofia Franck of Ithaca, won the vet title, with Corning pal Mary Wenck in 2nd (plus a mother-daughter placing with daughter Pam), fresh off an age group placing at Boilermaker..

We had tremendous help during race evening, but I personally want to give credit to Pam Carlucci, who took the whole day off from work to assist me. She hauled equipment from Jim Miner's house, and then set up the beautiful living room of food, flowers and candles in the pavillion. And, Tom Nix and Jim Miner, who both left work early, and came to help us set up and get going. Both men worked pre-, during and post-race, doing all kinds of grunt work.

Also, risking forgetting someone: Wineglass MVPs Fran and Bill Taylor drove in from Horseheads and steered the timing and finish chute with ease; plus, iceman-cometh John Sholeen, tuxedo-less John Whitman, Frolicing Steve Ryan, goddess lover John Hylas, vested but no-socks Alan Lockett and speedy son Nate Lockett, precision course marker and hose-lender Joe Dabes, Steve D. from Binghamton, who brought a new runner; no stitches needed Evan K., our course marshall; and Barb Sobol's husband Mark who "got promoted" this season and thus missed getting vomited on in the chute.

And kudos to Tour de Dryden Lake Dan Graybeal, who "auditioned" for the job of course cyclist. Dan emailed me to ask if he could help with his mountain bike. I said, "Can you cycle fast enough to stay ahead of the lead women?" He went out and did a time trial, and determined he couldn't pedal that fast. But he came anyway, led the race through the railroad bed and then cycled the course slowly to make sure everyone was OK.

Thanks, too, to the woodchuck who lives under my barn but didn't eat the flowers used for awards. And to my neighbors: No, there's no body buried in the back yard. That dirt was used to plant 10 flats of flowers.

Many runners remembered to bring a food donation, which was delivered to the Kitchen Cupboard.

Lorrie and I love our little women's race, and feel it fills a nice niche in our community.

Thanks to one and all!
