| Cayuga Lake Triathlon Race Report | |
Sunday, at last, a triathlon which lets me sleep in!
The inaugural Cayuga Lake Triathlon at Taughannock Falls State Park was a big success. Besides placing well in the overall standings and winning my age group, I had the addition satisfaction of helping to organize a beautiful event, and the pleasure of a partisan volunteer corps all along the course.
The swim: 1/2 mile in Cayuga Lake. Mine was nothing to write home about, really a warmup for the bike leg. Time after T1: 18 minutes.
So I had some catching up to do on the bike. I rode past people with the sixth fastest bike split, 47 minutes, which is over two minutes better than last month's tour of the course. Approaching the Cass Park turnaround, I saw the race leader returning, already minutes ahead of second place. I caught a group past the turnaround, and there were no more easy places. Terry Habecker had an amazing ride, and caught me about half way back to Taughannock.
Out to the run: I ran past Terry on Route 89 (but did not overcome his four minute deficit from wave 2) and saw three people ahead of me on Rice Road. One got away and one I reeled in on Falls Road. The other, I made gradual progress on, until I decided on the latter part of the descent on Park road to use my downhill skills. It turns out, he was in my age group. I put some space between us and made a show sprint to the finish to be sure.
I had seven seconds at the line, and the next place ahead was three and a half minutes. I forgave myself the wobbly transitions and the unremarkable swim, all well within this margin. Final: 1:36:39.
Can I get 92.1 gearhead points for that?
There's a whole 'nother story about putting this race together. A big thank you to all the race day volunteers who made our preparations come to fruition.
