Wineglass Marathon

Waking up hours before sunrise has always been my idea of a fun way to start the day, and that's exactly what I did Sunday in order to catch a ride to the marathon. Some of you know that this technically is not my first one, but it might as well be, considering how much I've changed as a runner since I picked up the hobby/sport last summer. I set off on Sunday morning from the starting line with "Gu" packs pinned to my new short shorts (I'm still getting used to them) and cruised off into the distance. In retrospect, I probably went out too quickly, but I felt incredibly energetic after a week of almost no activity. I set a goal for myself of anything under 3 hours, which seemed reasonable when I considered my times for other races over the summer. At the half, I felt great, and at a time around 1:27:00, I thought my goal would be easily had. Boy was I stupid. Everything was still fine until about mile 17, when I could really feel the fatigue in my calves start to set in. I held on until about mile 20 and then things started to slowly unravel. I faked a strong run in the last 0.05 miles for the crowds and for a good picture to send to my family.

I finished at 3:01:27 and didn't quite make my goal, but I'll take it and the lessons learned to Boston in the spring or whatever I run next fall.
