USATF Hydration Guidelines

USATF issued a press release in April regarding new hydration guidelines, specifically for marathoners. Fluid replacement guidelines have changed due to the hyponatremia scare that's been affecting slower marathoners (5 hours plus), and the onset of the marathon boom which is bringing many more beginners to the starting line. Although slower marathoners and beginners are not the only athletes likely to encounter hyponatremia.

You'll find the press release enclosed this issue, and more information and research articles are available at the www.usatf.org Web site. Also on the Web site, within a research article, you'll also find a test and formula for determining how much fluid you need based on your weight, weather conditions, exercise intensity and time spent on you feet. It's called "Self Testing Program for Optimal Hydration." USATF suggests clubs set up a testing clinic. Go ahead and read the protocol. It's definitely an interesting prospect.

Bottom line: The summer heat is coming, and take it from someone prone to severe heat illness -- drink, drink, drink; pee, pee, pee! (quote Ed Hart).
