FLRC Newsletter - Jun 2003
Track in Central NY

There are at least four summer track series ready to go, hosted by local running clubs. Results at all meets are published at respective Web sites. Track VP Tim Ingall has the FLRC summer series set, and you'll find the schedule for the three meets included in this newsletter. Tim needs volunteers too. You'll also find a copy of the summer all-comers meets hosted by the Syracuse Chargers. Also see www.syracusechargers.org. Both FLRC and the Chargers are rotating track venues in their respective regions. Tim has secured Cornell, Ithaca HS and Dryden HS.

Two more notables:

Triple Cities Runners Club has a Wednesday eve. track series from May to August, at the Maine-Endwell HS track. Standard events: mile, 800, 400 and 3,000 meters. Registration opens at 5:30 p.m.; meet starts at 6 p.m. There's a one-time fee of $3. Check their Web site at www.triplecitiesrunnersclub.org for date exceptions. There's a STAC track meet on May 28, and the Red Dress 5K Run is on June 25, so no meets will be held on those dates.

GVH has a Thursday Nite Races series of track meets at McQuaid HS on Clinton Ave., in Rochester. The dates are June 12, 26; July 10, 17 (Championship Nite). Events vary from week to week, and include some novelty track games. Fees are $3 for adults and $2 for kids 18-under. Go to www.gvh.net for complete information, or email Pete Glavin, track meet director, at gvhxc@rochester.rr.com (note new email address).

All this leads to the Empire State Games, July 23-27 in Buffalo. Scholastic and open athletes must qualify to compete in track & field. But masters qualify by meeting age group standards, which can be do-it-yourself obtained at the meets cited above, and at certified 5K and 10K road races (for the 10,000 and 5,000 meter track events).

All of the track meets conducted by area running clubs can be used as qualifiers for masters. Open and scholastic athletes have one designated qualifying meet within their respective regions. [We are Central region.] See your local coach for additional details. The masters T & F venue will be SUNY Buffalo at Amherst.

Go to www.empirestategames.org, and click on the summer games icon. It'll take some searching, but you'll find info for the masters division, including the qualifying charts. The entry booklet is not downloadable, so you'll need to request a booklet by calling the ESG hotline at 518-474-8889. Besides T & F, there's race walking, and a 10K road race at Delaware Park which does not have qualifying standards. You do need to pre-register, however.

The deadline for entry is June 24 -- no exceptions.

Masters T & F athletes must be age 30 or over by ESG Game days. The fee is $25 for the first event; $5 for each additional event; and $5 for relay teams.

The Games will return to Binghamton in 2004, then Hudson Valley in 2005. No sign of when they return to Ithaca.
