Tom Meyer and Phyllis Radke - Hartshorne Memorial Volunteers of the Year 2002-03

Congratulations and well-deserved honors to Tom and Phyllis, hard-working volunteers who serve in the shadows. Tom and Phyllis have completed a tremendous amount of volunteer hours behind the scenes. In this issue, we'll honor our Web master Tom Meyer; next month our "Artiste in Residence" Phyllis Radke will be in the spotlight.

We asked Tom to complete a profile so you'll get to know him and what he does in some depth. Reading about Tom, it reminded me how much I enjoy the profiles -- and how much I miss publishing them on a monthly basis (see article).

Tom does much more than serve as our Webmaster, as if that's not enough! He shows up to every FLRC executive board meeting, which is a near-death experience almost every time. In fact, at our last gathering, he was eating pizza and quite unaware I was about to announce him as our co-winner.

Tom did all the computer entries and results for the frenzied indoor track meet series, and still found time to run some events. He never once was impatient when "one more person" came late and asked to register. He e-mails all results to USATF for rankings; posts the results before you get home, and he's always one step ahead of every request.

Tom works with my editorial partner Tracy Atlas, and gets the newsletter up on the Web site each month. A talented runner, Tom wrote one of my favorite marathon stories we've published in the newsletter, regarding his personal best sub-3 New York City Marathon last fall.

Tom has been known to gently mediate fights on the listserv [at least the fights I'm involved in], and of interest to trivia buffs: Tom and I share the same birthday!

Congratulations Tom. We appreciate you more than you know. Be sure to read his profile, and say "good job!" when you see him.

Tom will receive a T-shirt quilt by Sam Familo if he chooses, or a similar gift at his request.
