IUTC runners in the Tully 5k this weekend
Tully Moo York Dairy 5K Saturday June 7th 03

It was a dark and rainy Saturday morning. Part of IUTC's distance crew trekked to Tully, Song Mountain Ski Resort to be exact, for the Tully MOO York Dairy 5K.

IUTC Runners were Sharif, Andris, Thomas, Ryan and Coach: We saw Robert later mile cheering us on. He and Mom got to drive in the country side near Tully looking for the race start. Coach's directions missed a critical turn, I think. Oops sorry Mom.

The lady who organizes the race told me that the race was flat (“pretty much” she says) and on country roads, with a view of the lake, about 80 - 100 runners, and great t-shirts. She was right about the flat course, except for the 1 mile up hill (500 vertical feet) at the beginning of the race.

Here is the Readers Digest version. It rained. There was one outhouse to use and it was uphill, very uphill The drinks were okaaaay, and all the old folks were incredulous that the IUTC "kids" were going to run "the whole 3 miles". In Tully they have not yet accepted the metric system, even though the race was an official 5k (3.1 miles) . Andris, Sharif, and Thomas bolted off, and I saw only glimpses of them the entire race. How they managed to recover from the hill so easily, I don't know, but they posted a 6 minute mile, UPHILL. They told me later that the three see accordion - ed (back and forth, close and apart) throughout the race. Ryan hung back with Old Coach, breathing down my neck most of the way.

Andris Goncarovs, Sharif Younes, Thomas and Ryan Connor, finished 1st, 3rd,4th, and 6th in their age group (15 and under) and Andris, Sharif, and Thomas, placed in the top 10 overall. Times were 19:33, 20:10, 20:53, and 22:35 respectively. Ryan's time is steadily improving and so is Thomas'. Good work boys. All the boys earned really nice medals, and now own a t shirt with a cow and sneakers on it. Note: We saw no cows in the race.

The most notable fashion statement was made by Sharif and Andris. Andris in his oversized very yellow shorts and Sharif in the billowing cow shirt, (they only had large, adult large). They looked silly, but everyone knew their names by the end of the race. That was the only way I knew where they where. I am surprised that the clothing didn't act like a parachute and hold them back, maybe it did, in reverse, hmmmmm. Big thanks to Robert and his mom for cheering us on at the three mile mark, they were the entire cheer squad except for the very beginning and the very end. Robert was not to go home with out a run though. He made Coach run a 2 mile warm down, at slightly less than race pace. Robert talked the whole way, breathing only slightly. Oh yes, even Coach (22:06) got a third place medal in the old guys division (40 and up)

Anyway we had a great time out in the country. During the trip home the car was filled with a hot debate over where we would stop for lunch. Consensus was reached in Dryden. Next 5K will be the Ithaca Twilight 5k in Ithaca. We are looking forward to it.
