Boilermaker Bound

The 26th annual Boilermaker 15K and 5K will be held at 8 a.m., Sunday July 13. Boilermaker Weekend also includes the National Distance Running Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, Saturday evening, July 12, at 5 p.m. at a theater in downtown Utica. It is free and open to the public.

This year's inductees are four-time Olympian and bronze medalist in the steeplechase, George Young; Olympian and former American and world record holder Mary Slaney; and world-class miler Jim Ryun. No word on who is going to show up in person.

Molly Huddle fourth at Nationals

Elmira native and former Section 4/IAC runner Molly Huddle, now a freshman at Notre Dame U., finished fourth at the NCAA Div. I Nationals in the 5,000-meter track race, with a time of 15:55.96. Lauren Fleshman of Stanford won the race in 15:24.06 (her 3rd straight victory), followed by Shalane Flanagan (15:30.6) of N.C.; and Colorado's Sara Gorton (15:40.13).

Elmira Southside HS Girls' Relay Team Second in Nation

The Southside girls 4 x 1-mile relay team (Shannon Semski, Lindzie Foster, Melissa Wida and Sara Rice) placed 2nd at the Adidas Outdoor National Championships (National Scholastic Championships) June 14 in N.C. The team ran a school record 20:56.11 (average 5:14 per mile pace), and the time was the fifth fastest ever recorded at the adidas meet.

Southside finished behind national powerhouse Saratoga Springs, who won the relay in 20:42.74.

Coach Ben Cardamone and the Southside girls attended our indoor track meets this past winter. Congrats to all!
