The 36th annual Hartshorne Memorial Masters Mile -- Jan. 25!

As we go to press in early December, we do not have an official entry form. But, the date is Jan. 25 -- one week later than usual, and the masters mile will be held in conjunction with a Cornell University Invitational. The site is Barton Hall, on the Cornell campus, and you must be age 40-up for men; 30-up women - qualifying standards, but not so strict that you should be intimidated. There will be several sectional heats, and elite invitational masters races for the fastest men and women. If you just turned 40, or have not run the masters mile in the past, contact Rick Hoebeke, 2706 Agard Rd., Trumansburg, N.Y. 14886; or call 387-6431. If you ran the mile last year, you'll be receiving an entry via mail in the near future. We will not publish the mile entry, and it will not be on our Web site. So, if you want to run, contact Hoebeke ASAP.

There will be equal prize money for both elite men and women. And ,Tom Hartshorne, and his sister Kim Troy, have offered a bonus prize money purse for the elite men's and women's races. As we go to press, the plan is for the elite men's winner to break a certain time (TBA). For the elite women, we are looking at the elite women's winner to set a pending AR in her respective age category. Protocols differ because the nature of the women's field differs dramatically each year from the men's elite group.

Remember: Spectators are always welcome!

The sixth annual Finger Lakes Snowshoe - Feb. 1

Due to the scheduling of the Hartshorne Mile, the FL Snowshoe has been moved to the first Saturday in February. RD Joe Reynolds reports that we'll be getting a shipment of loaner Redfeather snowshoes for our 7.6-mile race and FR/Hike. T-shirts will be available race day.The FL Snowshoe 7.6-miler is the first leg of the FL Trail Runners Circuit! The application is enclosed; be sure to give this sport a trial run. No snow? It'll be a trail run. But...Pray for snow; dig out the warm layers of insulating clothes; and expect nutty awards and hot chili post-race.

2003 Snowshoe Racing Calendar

Yes, there is one and it's really long. It's from the ESSSRA -- Empire State Snowshoe Racing Association headed by Mark Elmore (snowshoeguy@yahoo.com). We're running the first two pages this month, and you'll get the rest in February. The races are Nordic sprints and 5Ks, but do not include our FL Snowshoe, or the Frozen Asset 5K, from our friends in Rochester.

Cortland Running Group
