Alright, a race report was requested... Eileen and I
ran the portland ME marathon this past Oct 5. Started out 39 degrees,
didn't get more than 1 or 2 degrees warmer, so we were stuck with shorts
and t-shirts and no time for our muscles to warm up. The hills were
killers, even after training on hammond hill trails east(?) of
ithaca. However, the crowds were great, and I was definitely jealous
that I hadn't put my name on my shirt like Eileen, who got a lot of
personal cheers. The course was absolutely beautiful, all along the
costal area in back neighborhoods with gorgeous trees and nice houses and
kids and adults had water stations they set up in their front yards and
signs all along the course. My legs cramped at mile 22 probably from
the cold, but I still finished with a 3:40:49 just 10 seconds under what
I needed to qualify for Boston, which I plan to run this april.
Eileen was unfortunate enough to be running on a torn heel ligament and
to cramp up at mile 18, but still finished with a respectable
3:45:42. Winning times: fastest male was 2:39:18, fastest female
a3:09:49. The funniest part of the race were the photos...I had no
idea that they were taking them at mile 23, 24, 26 and so my face is
showing the pains of the last aching miles of a marathon. All told,
the race was a lot of fun and absolutely beautiful...it just could have
been a bit flatter and warmer for my taste.
