I have been asked to write a report about the Cazenovia 10 Mile I participated in on the 4th of July, and although this is not something I do on a regular basis, I thought it might be fun to give some high-lights of the event.
I have been training to improve my endurance, and chose a few longer distance events to give myself a break from 5ks. Someone suggested the Cazenovia 10 miler, and I preregistered for more incentive. I had hoped to finish the race in under 76 minutes, at 7:35 pace. I realized the morning of the race that this might be a little hard to accomplish under clear skies and hot sun.
Kudos to the Syracuse Chargers Track Club--the race was directed very well and I enjoyed the extra efforts they put into having a time keeper at each mile, as well as multiple water stops and hoses on the course.
I felt pretty good for the first part of the rolling course where the West side of the lake was shaded, and pleased with 38 minutes at the 5 mile mark. This was the turning point around the lake, and led us into more direct sun light. I began thinking at this that all the "rolling" hills tended toward the upward direction and I began heating up to much, stopped sweating, and had to slow up to compensate.
At this point I found myself behind a gentleman runner who had chosen to run through the sprinklers, as many of us had--although I had seriously hoped my back side was not as visible through the fabric as his was. I will have to admit that this helped me get back to my original pace for fear that I would be stuck staring at that for the next three miles. Of course I then began worrying that he was getting the same view of my hind quarters.
I finished strong, considering the heat--a little slower than I had hoped with a 1:17:41 and 7:45 pace. Unfortunately I did not win an age group award, placing 6th in a large field of 32 aged 30-34, although I was in the top 20 women to finish with 480 total participants. I look forward to another attempt at the Ithaca 5 & 10.
I have to thank Katie Danner and Bob Cogden who met me at the finish line with cups of water, and Bob suggested a refreshing dip in the lake.(It's worth heading to an event as a group, which guarantee's you a personal cheering squad at the finish). Diane Sherrer and Pam Carlucci also made the trip, both participating in the 5k along with Chris Mansfield. I suspect it was very hot for all of us.
Katie finished well with a 68:19 for 4th women over-all and 2nd in her age group, as did Bob with 74:38 placing 2nd in his age group. John Whitman also made the trip and finished in his predicted time of 64:58, 6:30 pace and 16th over-all.
The finishing touch was the yummy blueberry pancakes, fruit and juice at the finish.
