I have come home to Ohio after completing the 50 mile
version of the Finger Lakes 50's and am recounting my experience.
Despite finishing last, I know I could have finished last, by less. I'm
remembering the three belly lops I took and the time I got lost on the
second loop and added about 3/4 mile and 20 minutes. I'm looking at the
blisters on my left foot that started early in the second loop. I'm
looking at the scrapes on my knees and elbows and the bruise on my right
thigh. I'm looking and feeling my bruised ribs. I'm looking at my swollen
right thumb; sprained in two of my falls. And I'm really feeling my
swollen right great toe which I broke on my last fall at mile 47. All
that, and what are my memories? Nothing but good! The organization of
the event and the friendliness and helpfulness of all the volunteers (and
runners) was just great. The course itself is spectacular; what a
treasure. I will long remember the treks across cow pastures as well as
the trails through beautiful forest. And I will certainly remember the
kindness and patience of the volunteers as I struggled along in the heat
(Oh yes; did I fail to mention the heat?!). My wife (who also came out of
this somewhat bruised with a significant wrist sprain) and I have quickly
concluded that "would we come back?....in a heart-beat! THANK YOU.
Thank you all for providing such an excellent venue and hospitality; and
a great race!
