Two Super Races: St. James and Red Baron

Sunday, Oct 6 is a very busy day in Central NY for road racing. Of course, it's Wineglass weekend and Syracuse Festival of Races day -- and the Pit Run 10K in Oneonta. But there's another super race being held that Sunday afternoon, and it's the St. James 5K in Johnson City.

FLRC members Suzanne Myette and Kevin Pasterchik both serve on the race committee, and the organization is outstanding. I drove over to the race last year, and left feeling like part of the family. Proceeds from the race are donated to the St. James Parish Scholarship Fund for Catholic Schools, and to a local charity to be selected by the St. James Middle School students.

The 5K course is a fast double loop; a 2.5K walk is also provided for fitness trekkers. The race begins at 2 p.m.

I have vivid memories of the parishioners singing a rousing God Bless America just before the start of the 5K. There were lots of parent/child duos running the 5K together. I had the priviledge of racing head-to-head with the St. James parish priest, Fr. Cliff. He was encouraging the entire two loops, and although he had never met me, he made a point of always calling me by my first name.

A huge spread of food was placed out in the parish hall, and generous awards were presented to numerous age groups. I really didn't know many people there, but the parishioners who showed up to work or run the race, or support the fund-raising made me feel so welcomed.

The 5K fee is $15 per adult/$25 per couple, or $7 per child 18-under. The 2.5K walk fees are $10 per person, or $7 per child 18-under. Those fees include a T-shirt.

The 22nd annual Red Baron Half Marathon is set for 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3, beginning high atop Spencer Hill at Corning Community College.

Is there a more perfect time of year for a half marathon? And it's downhill in the middle miles. The race fee is $20 pre- or post-registration. Park at the Corning YMCA (near the finish of the Wineglass Marathon), and you'll be bussed to the top of Spencer Hill.

Race proceeds benefit the Spencer Crest Nature Center.
