News Notes
Dick Beardsley will be the featured guest for the Wineglass Marathon in October.
The Guthrie Gallop 5K and 10K will have a few tweaks this May. I'll give you more details when I see the entry, but some of the upgrades include an earlier start for the 10K/5K (you can still run them both and for one fee only); an increase in entry fees, with proceeds to benefit a battered women's shelter; equalized age group awards; more rewards for mid- and back-packers; a wicking windshirt instead of a T-shirt; and perhaps course certification. As always, the Gallop will be a masterpiece.
The field for the 2002 Vermont City Marathon (end of May) is closed.
The finish line of this year's Forks XV will be slightly altered, and has been remeasured and recertified by the able TCRC crew. The start has been moved to the front of the school bus garage, and the finish is changed so that you turn right as you approach the parking lot, then follow the same route you did in the first mile of the race. The finish will be the straight section of driveway where the middle school and high school are joined. Only if you've run this rite of spring, will this make sense to you.
The Kelly LaBare 5K will merge with the Spiedie Fest Balloon Rally 5K, and will move to Otsiningo Park in Binghamton on August 4, at 1 p.m. The LaBare 5K was held on the first Sunday in June in Endicott. The very excellent Grace Tabeek will direct again.
Cortland will co-host the 25th annual Empire State Games this summer, along with Syracuse.Cortland is set to host 11 sports including the masters division events. I'll assume this means masters track & field, but I'll let you know in upcoming issues.
The games are set for July 31-Aug. 4, and most of the events will be
held on the Cortland State campus.
