Oswego County Runs For Fun

[Asst editor's note: This received from Mary O'Brien up in Oswego, who says that, oddly enough, she is NOT related to the famous Bill O'Brien of Syracuse Chargers fame, and who would like to encourage everyone reading this to head north for this year's series.]

Oswego County's 7th annual "Runs for Fun" awards banquet was held January 18, 2002 in Oswego, N. Y. Original organizers Don Masterson and Cathy Santos welcomed guest speaker, Dave Oja of the Syracuse Chargers, who summerized his several years in running and lessons learned along the way.

The 2001 series had the most ever races (18) since theseries began in 1995. A minimum participation in seven races emphasizes the local races, encourages running for fitness and fun, and developes an interest in Oswego County. From its modest beginning of a handful of runners, required to complete six races in the series, it has now grown to 58 participants completing seven races. Since 1998, avid runners Mike and Mary O'Brien of Wholesale Diamond Exchange have provided sponsorship insuring unique jewelry awards, an award to each runner completing the series, and a celebratory dinner. The event is one of the purest forms of running in that the runner only needs to run. The series has impacted the lives of many, who never thought they had the spirit in them. Don Masterson, Cathy Santos and sponsors Mike and Mary O'Brien of Wholesale Diamond Exchange are looking forward to continuing the series and once again affirming that running is fun.
