Empire State Senior Games Alert: June 5-9 at Cortland State
Many of you know I have "issues" with the way the Empire State Summer and Winter Games officials treat masters athletes. I don't really appreciate the inferior methods they apply to athletes that are not open and scholastic. Things have gotten worse since 1989 in Ithaca, when officials slammed shut a gate and wouldn't let our group of masters runners bring the torch inside the stadium.
Having said that for the umpteeth time, I will admit that I've heard nothing but rave reviews for the Empire State Senior Games, open to all athletes age 50-up.
The 2002 edition has been moved back to the city of Cortland , after a few years up in Syracuse. The dates are June 5-9, and sports include track & field, road racing, cycling, triathlon and orienteering.
Lennie Tucker, Jim Miner and I have entries which will be distributed at Skunk and around town. You must pre-register by May 10.
The one-time entry fee is $25, and with that charge you can enter as many events as you'd like in many specialties. There's extra costs for bowlers, golfers and party/BBQ goers.
For information, write NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation - Central Region, 6105 East Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville, NY 13078-9654; call (315) 492-9654.
Take note, especially Vern, Katy, Frank, Chuck, Rich and all the
seniors who have asked me about more track opps.
