Random Notes From the Editor's Desk
The Adirondack Marathon is set for Sunday, Sept. 23 in Schroon Lake. There is still space for marathoners, but the inaugural half marathon is FULL. All the sweet-talking won't get you in; we tried.
The Wineglass Marathon & Three-Person Relay entry form is included in this newsletter -- at least all I could cut and paste into a front & back page. FYI: It is $5 less to go online and register on their web site: www.wineglassmarathon.com. That's where you'll find all kinds of good information.
Remember, this is the 20th anniversary of the Wineglass Marathon, so don't miss it!
Joe Henderson, Runner's World columnist, is this year's featured guest. He'll be speaking at the expo on Saturday, at its new site: Corning East High School.
New this year: a Clydesdale division -- with prize money! Start eating those Twinkies now! No cheating -- you'll be weighed. Cash prizes for open/masters, men/women.
As a couple of friends once said to me: Wineglass is one marathon we all can do where everyone will know your name when you finish. Your friends can be there for you, because it's our local race. You can also sleep in your own bed the night before; you can get home post-race rather quickly without those 5-hour leg-cramping rides; and you don't have to lie outside on the cold grass for hours before the race starts, like you do in NYC and Boston.
See you there, October 7th!
The inaugural Heritage Day 15K is set for Sept. 9th; it's a cooperative effort from FLRC and TCRC, and directed by the very able Tom Ryan. The entry was in the August newsletter. It's an excellent training effort for you fall marathoning-types.
It's also a club challenge, so get your teams together and head over to Berkshire. They've already got a big banner stretched across Main Street to welcome you!
Speaking of big banners stretched across the street, the Syracuse Festival of Races is coming up on Sept. 30th. Want one more fast 5K? Get yourself to Manley Field House for separate men's and women's 5Ks. Niagara USATF teams also should get together and fight for the prize money.
One last thing: The Upstate New York Cross Country Series gets underway Sept. 8th. For those who enjoy this type of running, it's long-awaited. The final meet will be in Ithaca this year. A brief summary of the series is at the end of this issue. For more info, go to the GVH Web site at www.gvh.net. High Noon fields a team, but you don't have to be on a team to participate. Also: a national masters XC 8K championship race is due in Rochester on Nov. 4th.
