From the Editor's Desk

While we're waiting for more Boston Marathon stories to flood in (hint, hint!), this newsletter issue is all about previews and promotions, and Skunk results. We are including several entry forms, and those we don't print we hope to scan onto our FLRC Web site. You'll find our own race forms here, plus some from neighboring running clubs with whom we have a publication give-and-take. You can also find more on the Web sites of local running clubs like:

Just a few comments and plugs, in no particular order:

The Twin Tiers Race for the Cure 5K -- for both men and women, is set for May 20 at the Arnot Mall in Big Flats. The 5K begins at 9 a.m.; pre-race entry fee is $15 or $20 race day. Overall male and female winners, plus the first breast cancer survivor win airline tickets. (No, in case you're salivating, it won't be easy to win. Mark Andrews won in a sub-15 in 2000; expect a Charlene Lyford -- or someone of her caliber -- in the women's race. And the cancer survivors are one tough crowd of competitors as well!) Age group winners receive gift certificates to any store in the Arnot Mall. Call 1-800-952-2662 for information or check their Web site at  http://www.twintiersrace.org

The Syracuse Race for the Cure is being held at Shoppingtown Mall on May 19; the Buffalo version is Memorial Day weekend.

The inaugural Bob Bridgman 5K Memorial Run is slated for Monday, May 28, at noon, on the campus of Mansfield (Pa.) University, where Bob was a math professor for most of his teaching career. The entry fee is $10 plus a bag or can or dog/cat food. One of Bob's "pet" charities was the SPCA, which will receive the donations.

The Mansfield HS cross country team is helping to organize the race, and the Wineglass Running Club will time it. Mansfield is just 30 minutes south of Corning. Bob was much loved by many of us, and we urge you all to make the trip to the race. For info, call Roger Learn at 570-297-3271 or email Jim Keyes at jkeyessmhs@hotmail.com.

The fourth annual Kelly LaBare 5K Run/Walk is on for June 3 at Grippen Park, in Endicott. The entry is enclosed in this issue. LaBare was a graduate of Cornell, and another beloved and most missed friend. Try to make the trip; good cause, and nice T-shirts and BBQ.

The ever-popular Cazenovia July 4th 10 mile and 5K races require a strict entry deadline. So, get it done by June 24! --and they mean it. The entry is enclosed for your convenience.

And, speaking of races that end in a scenic village park by the water's edge, check out the Can U Run 5K in Bainbridge. This low-key event can be done as either a normal race (on village street and country road) or as a run/canoe duathlon. Sitting on the banks of the river after the 5K, sipping a cold drink or eating a spiedie from the concession tents (there's a country fair in the park as part of the weekend's festivities), and watching the canoeists land makes for a great "I Love New York"-type weekend memory!
