Joel Zucker Tribute in UltraRunning

The September 2000 issue of UltraRunning has an excellent article called "Joel's Story," by Robert B.Boeder (pp. 37-38). Those with fond memories of Joel will enjoy the essay. The article accompanies extensive Hardrock 100 coverage, Joel's favorite -- and last -- trail race.

It's a Girl!? For Lorrie Marnell

Congratulations to Lorrie on the "birth" of her new daughter WILMA on Sept. 24. Mother and child are doing well after 3 hours, 23 minutes, 24 seconds of rigorous labor in Schroon Lake. Sara Alba, Wilma's godmother, flew in from Florida to coach Lorrie and be with her during the ordeal.

"I'm thrilled, but the splinters are killing me," said Lorrie after the birthing process. " I wish the kid had come with a ribbon in her hair. How else can I tell if it's a boy or a girl?"

When eldest daughter Shaleena heard the news, she yelled, "But where's the kid supposed to sleep?"

Wilma will have to share a nursery with 2-year-old Fred, a boy child adopted in Schroon Lake in 1998.

"The doctors told me I'll have to chain Fred and Wilma outside so their bottoms won't split," Lorrie told us shortly after being handed the newborn. "And boy, the kid is really heavy!"

Want to Talk about Running?

You can do so with Grete Waitz every Sunday from 9-11 a.m. EST. Call toll free at 1-877-883-9232, or e-mail her at grete@eyada.com.

Grete's latest project is a talk radio show on the Internet. She goes live online for 2 hours each Sunday morning. Grete says 2 hours is a long time to talk, so she's depending on special guests. Amby Burfoot, Anne Marie Lauck, Gail Kislevitz and NY Times reporter Jere Longman have sat in the hotseat so far.

Grete sent me the business cards and said spread the word. Go to eyada.com and see what's going on.

Breaking News...

Congratulations to Bill Taylor, Tom Knapp and the Wineglass Running Club volunteers for an outstanding Wineglass Marathon & Relay event on Oct. 1. A good time was had by all, with a big contingent representing the Ithaca area and having a great day. It is without a doubt one of my favorite events all year. (Many thanks to Watson's WART Women's "corporate sponsor," Kirk Peters and the Glen Animal Hospital.)

Good news: It looks like the 20th annual Wineglass will go on in 2001. Sources tell me someone (plural) has come forward to direct the race -- and it's not me, although I thank you all for asking me to do it (way too much stress!). I won't say anymore than that until I've been given the juicy details. But from what I've been told, it looks like we'll all be happy. Stay tuned.
