Triple Tracks Revisited

May 30, 2003

I'd like to revive the infamous Triple Tracks Run this summer. Back in the First Age, this was a summer tradition for High Noon Runners like Rick Cleary and John Whitman. I have done it 3 or 4 times, before it went out of favor. Here are the details as I remember:

1. It's done on a weekend morning in the summer.

2. Course - Starts at Teagle and runs down to Ithaca High track. 2 miles are completed on the track (a 1 mile option is also available). Then it goes up East Hill to Ithaca College track, and 1-2 miles are run on the track. Then it goes down and up to Cornell and 1-2 miles are run on the Cornell football stadium track. There was an alternate (easier) version for a few years that started and finished at Rick Cleary's house, halfway up South Hill.

I'm not sure of the total distance, but I think it's about 17 miles if you do all the 2 mile runs. The runs between the tracks are done very slowly in a group. Everyone is free to run the 1-2 miles on the track as fast/slow as they wish. Nobody leaves the track until everyone has completed the track run.

I'd like to schedule the run for 8 AM on Sunday, Aug. 24. This date has been carefully chosen to fit into my schedule, and to give out of town people time to make their reservations. I've heard talk of other High Nooners wanting to schedule this event earlier in the year. This is perfectly all right, but these will be Triple Tracks training runs, not the official 2003 Triple Tracks. In order to get credit for the 2003 official Triple Tracks, you must complete the Aug. 24 event.

Hope to see everyone at 8 AM on Sunday, Aug. 24 at Teagle.

FLRC Track Meet in Dryden

May 30, 2003

Notes for those planning to attend the FLRC outdoor track meet Tuesday June 3rd at Dryden High School.

  1. The vote for school budget and board (that includes me if any of you are Dryden voters) is taking place that evening and will use the same parking lot! While I don't think it will be an issue I have been asked to forward a request that people park in the back lot (go around the school, to the left, and behind). If a small number of FLRC (i.e. people setting up and hauling equipment) cars park in the lot near the track but stay far from the school it should not be a problem.
  2. The Dryden High School Art Department is having it's annual art show which intentionally coincides with the vote to help draw people! (pun intended! ;-) ) If you have a few minutes and enjoy seeing what kids can do artistically feel free to wander in.
  3. There are 2 port-a-johns at the north end of the bleachers. Also, with the school open, you could probably duck in there to use the facilities.

Rochester Westside Relay for Life

June 3, 2003

A message from local runner Rick Hoebeke:

Hi All,

As many of you may know, Charlie McMullen (Rochester, NY) is one of the running legends of our area. Arguably the most talented runner ever produced in Rochester, Charlie, age 51, is in the midst of a 2 year battle with colon cancer. He has been receiving chemo and radiation therapy since the original diagnosis in April 2001. After a 5 month period of remission, the cancer reapppeared in his liver and on his spine. Charlie was recently heard to say "Cancer cannot win...it has taken away my work (he hasn't taught since December), my running, and my health. But it can't take away my family or my friends." Jack McMullen, Charlie's brother, and another prolific Rochester marathoner and cancer survivor Don McNelly have organized the "Rochester Westside Relay for Life" in Charlie's name, and to be held at Charlie's alma mater Spencerport High School track on Friday, June 6; it is a twelve hour event, starting a 6pm on Friday night and will end with a celebration at 8am on Saturday morning, June 7.

Several High Nooners will trek to Rochester this Friday evening to spend most of the evening running and walking on the track, joining the Rochester running community (we are not staying all night!) to honor Charlie and this wonderful event. Casey Carlstrom, John Whitman, Terry Delaney, and myself will take part. We are looking for "pledges," of any amount of your choosing, to support our efforts on the track and that will be donated to the American Cancer Society. We suggest, if you are willing, that anyone who knows Charlie or who can relate to his health problems, to provide us with a pledge of $10, $15, $20, $25, or more; We hope that a large number of you may be willing to give to this event and for this specific cause. Charlie, as many of you know, was a fine tuned athlete who took care of himself physically. So it just goes to show that anyone cause get cancer or some life threatening disease. We hope HNAC and FLRC will come together to support this event in the way of pledges. If there are others out there who would like to join us this Friday evening in Rochester, please give me a call.

Thanks to all in advance,

Rick Hoebeke (aka, coach)
